SOLE Students Swim Along to Poudre River Fish Hatchery
May 27, 2016
Where are fish raised before they are stocked in ponds? What do their homes look like? How does their life cycle work? Walden Elementary SOLE students visited the Poudre River Fish Hatchery to find the answers!
Hatchery technicians gave students a tour of the entire facility, where millions of rainbow and greenback cutthroat trout eggs are produced. Thanks to all who made this behind-the-scenes trip happen!
A Wild Family Nature Night at Walden Elementary
April 20, 2016
Walden students, their families, and SOLE partners joined together for a night of fun, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
Walden students and their families enjoyed an evening of nature themed fun with Colorado Parks & Wildlife and our fantastic participating partners: U.S. Forest Service, Bird Conservancy of the Rockies U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and CPW’s State Forest State Park & Bellvue-Watson Hatchery…. not to mention our Red-tailed Hawk mascot, Talon!
The evening was filled with an array of exciting, educational outdoor activities. Students shouted with delight during Backyard Bass fishing practice and gasped with excitement at the opportunity to try their hands at archery. While some students created animal tracks in the sand, others stared in awe at live sac fry fish underneath the microscope. Meanwhile, many families showed off their wildlife trivia knowledge, explored animal skulls and pelts, and tested their bird identification skills.
As always, the night culminated with our fantastic prize drawing. Thanks to Cabela’s, many families went home with great outdoor gear such as kids’ tents, sleeping bags, and water bottles. Others won fishing poles, binoculars, and even our grand prize annual State Parks pass!
The only thing better than getting kids outdoors is including the entire family. The SOLE program would like to thank all of our partners, Walden staff, and everyone else who made this event happen.
SOLE Students Snowshoe with Yampatika
March 11, 2016
Walden SOLE students journeyed to Steamboat Springs for an amazing adventure with Yampatika. Snow glittered across the mountainside as students trekked through, looking at and listening to the nature living among the hills.
Inside, they warmed up and opened their minds to the region’s history with interactive displays and hands-on activities.
Thanks to all who made this spectacular field trip happen! We are excited to welcome Walden Elementary to their first year in the SOLE program!
