Fun and Fishing at Longfellow’s Family Nature Night
March 9, 2016
Longfellow students, their parents, and SOLE partners joined together for a night of fun, fishing, and families.
Students and their families enjoyed an evening of nature themed fun with Colorado Parks & Wildlife and our fantastic participating partners: CPW Southeast Region Staff, Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, CPW Hatcheries, and Greater Arkansas River Nature Association.
The evening was filled with an array of exciting, educational outdoor activities. Students shouted with delight during Backyard Bass fishing practice and gasped with excitement at the opportunity to try archery. Families explored the organisms that lurk beneath the surface of the nearby Arkansas River: stoneflies, snails, and worms, oh my!
While some families trekked outside to try GPS navigation, others learned about trout life cycles. Children were captivated at the sight of tiny sac fries and fingerlings swimming about beneath the microscope- much like a trout captivated by the shiny, handcrafted lures the students got to make. Meanwhile, other families solved wildlife trivia questions and examined local geology and fossils.
As always, the night culminated with pizza and prizes. Many families won fantastic outdoor gear and even a State Parks pass! Thank you to Longfellow staff, CPW Southeast Region staff, and all of our partners who made this event happen.
