The sun shined through a blue sky when Moffat SOLE students arrived at Chico Basin Ranch for their overnight field trip. In collaboration with the Catamount Institute, educators led their campers through an array of outdoor activities. Students learned the ways of a ranch and dug their hands into a pond in search of macroinvertebrates. The students also engaged in a quick lesson about local ecology and wildlife from the local CPW District Wildlife Manager.

As the sun set, stars filled the sky and crickets began chirping. The campers hunkered down in their tents for a good night’s sleep before the following day’s adventures.

Morning came, and the chirps drifted from crickets to those of song birds. Bird Conservancy of the Rockies gave students the opportunity to view those birds up close at their educational bird banding station. Binoculars in hand, the campers viewed other birds perched within the trees and flying through the sky.

Thank you to Catamount Institute for providing photos of this trip. It looks like the students had a fantastic time!

Fun and Fishing at Moffat’s Family Nature Night

March 10, 2016

Moffat students, their parents, and SOLE partners joined together for a night of fun, fishing, and families.

Students and their families enjoyed an evening of nature themed fun with Colorado Parks & Wildlife and our fantastic participating partners: CPW Southwest Region Staff, Fort Garland Museum, and the National Park Service.

The evening was filled with an array of exciting, educational outdoor activities. Students shouted with delight as they cast out their fishing lines and gasped with excitement at the opportunity to try archery. Outside, families practiced throwing spears using an ancient hunting tool- the atlatl. Meanwhile, others explored wildlife trivia and archeology.

As always, the night culminated with food and prizes. Many families won fantastic outdoor gear and even a State Parks pass! Thank you to Moffat Consolidated Elementary staff, CPW Southwest Region staff, and all of our partners who made this event happen. We hope that our Moffat SOLE families had a meaningful, fun evening that inspires them to get outdoors!
