Longfellow Families Explore the Natural World
March 9, 2017
Longfellow students, their parents, and SOLE partners joined together for a night of nature-themed fun!
Students and their families enjoyed an evening of nature themed fun with Colorado Parks & Wildlife and our fantastic participating partners: CPW Southeast Region staff, Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, Mount Shavano Fish Hatchery, Guidestone Colorado, Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA), Bureau of Land Management, and the Royal Gorge.
The evening was filled with an array of exciting, educational outdoor activities. Students shouted with delight during Backyard Bass fishing practice and gasped with excitement at the opportunity to try archery. Laughter filled the hallways as students dressed up in googly eyes and antennae, a couple of the numerous items that represented insect adaptations.
While some families tested their navigation skills, others learned about trout life cycles. Children were captivated at the sight of tiny sac fries and fingerlings swimming about beneath the microscope- much like a trout captivated by the shiny, handcrafted lures that families created. Meanwhile, other families solved wildlife trivia questions and examined local rocks and minerals. Many learned about Colorado’s plant life as well, twisting a tree core into a stump in search of knowledge.
As always, the night culminated with pizza and prizes. Many families won fantastic outdoor gear and even a State Parks pass! Thank you to Longfellow staff, CPW Southeast Region staff, and all of our partners who made this event happen.
