What is SOLE?

Schools and Outdoor Learning Environments

Schools and Outdoor Learning Environments (SOLE) is designed to increase interest and participation in the outdoors. We connect Colorado 4th grade students and their families to local environmental education programs and outdoor locations.

We Do This By:

•  Providing field trip funding and access to transportation to take students on field trips to state parks and other partner sites.

•  Creating programs and incentives that encourage the use of school grounds as outdoor classrooms.

•  Facilitating opportunities for students and their families to connect with partner programs and opportunities to recreate outdoors.

Program Components

As a school participating in the SOLE program, funding provides for each fourth grade student to:

  • 3 Field Trips
    • One to a Colorado State Park or other Colorado Parks and Wildlife property
    • One to a History Colorado affiliate site
    • One to a partner location
  • Family Nature Night hosted at each school
  • Family Events at State Parks and/or partner locations
  • In-class program provided by CPW staff, History Colorado staff, and/or other partner organizations
  • Optional Professional development for SOLE teachers
  • Optional Basic Archery Instructor certification for PE teachers and archery equipment provided through the Colorado Archery in the Schools Program

The Schools and Outdoor Learning Environments (SOLE) program, funded by Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), started in 2013 as a pilot program through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. We have one simple mission:

Connect kids to the outdoors!

In 2013, the pilot program began with fourth grade classes in two schools: Pennock Elementary (Brighton, CO) and Roxborough Intermediate School (Littleton, CO).  In 2014, the program expanded to include the two pilot schools with an additional nine schools spanning the Denver Metro area…a total of 1,900 students.  These schools range all across the spectrum of demographics and location.

In the 2015-2016 school year, the SOLE program continued to expand throughout all the regions of the state, reaching a total of 25 schools across Colorado.  In 2016-17, SOLE partnered with 35 schools across the state.

This year, SOLE is partnering with approximately 50 schools across the state! Interested in becoming a partner organization or a volunteer? Contact us.
